March 2nd-6th is School Social Work Week.  In our role as advocates, it's important to advocate for ourselves as a valuable resource to our school and community.  A big part of that is educating staff, administrators, and community members about what we do!  It is also important to take time to celebrate each other and our accomplishments so that we have fuel to continue to do the work!  Here are some resources to educate and celebrate!

Purpose and Goals of the Conference:

In the wake of the #metoo movement and many highly publicized cases of sexual violence, students are increasingly disclosing experiences of sexual harassment and assault, both in and outside of school. School social workers and counselors are often expected to support affected students and coordinate investigations while assisting school administration in managing the resulting school culture throughout the process. Through interactive sessions with attorneys, professional educator/advocates, and Rape Crisis Center’s GameChangers youth advisory board, this conference will provide participants with:

1. A shared understanding of sexual violence;
2. Knowledge and skills to balance the needs and rights of students with the legal responsibilities of schools
3. Best practices in supporting students; and
4. A plan of action to take back to their school.

Do you have a unique and interesting idea to help students and families? 

Wisconsin School Social Work Association is interested in supporting our members! We have mini-grants available to help our members try a new initiative or innovative idea in through their school social work practice. Grant money should be used to directly impact or benefit students and/or family needs. Applicants may request any amount up to $500 to support their.

Requirements:

Only WSSWA members are eligible to apply

Grant monies should be used during the 2019-2020 school year

Grant recipients must submit a brief end of the year report on the impact of their project.

Applicant must be working as a School Social Worker in the State of Wisconsin.

Project must directly impact students and family needs.

On November 21, our lobbyist Jack O’Mera, along with our UW-Madison liaison, Jenny Braunginn, met with Representative Milroy to discuss the importance of requirements around the school social work profession in the state of Wisconsin, including licensure and coursework.  A letter was composed to outline the various ways one can obtain the education and licensure necessary for the position, which will also be shared with DPI and school districts who are wondering how they can participate in getting people qualified for vacant positions.

Hello Friends,

We are pleased to invite you to A Morning with Narcotics Anonymous. As we gather for our Multi-Regional Service Learning Days, we have created an opportunity for you to join us at the beginning of our event.

Please join us at: 
Delta Hotel in Racine, WI on Friday, September 13th, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. Check-in 9:00-9:30 in the Society Room of the Grand Ballroom. 

This presentation is dedicated to strengthening our relationship with professionals who work with drug addiction in any capacity. Many of our members started their journey of recovery from addiction through encounters with medical professionals, criminal justice professionals or therapists. It is important to us to build and maintain strong relationships with you.

The morning's format will center around an informational presentation. There will be refreshments and plenty of time to answer questions you may have, to hear about your experiences working with addicts, and to network with other professionals. 

Topics we plan to cover are:

History of Narcotics Anonymous
Basics of Recovery in NA
What your clients can expect at an NA meeting
How to find NA in your local community

There is NO COST to attend this workshop. however, we do ask that you register so we can accurately plan for seating and food and beverages.
